1. Page 105 of Schönberg’s Sketchbook III (Belmont Music)
Schönberg’s sketch from around 5 July 1908 for Entrueckung (see below), adapted from pp. 122/123 of Stefan Anton George’s Der siebente Ring (Berlin, Blätter für die Kunst, 1907).

2. Annotation, page 105 (left).
Whilst Schönberg inscribed the top left hand corner of the sketch with the annotation, “Stefan George (123.7 Ring) III Satz Streich Quartett”, presumably with the intention of this being the third movement of his Second String Quartet, Entrueckung eventually became the fourth and final movement of the work.

4 page letter written on both sides of on one sheet, folded in half.
From: Horowitz in Vienna to Schönberg in Gmunden [Preslgütl]
Schönberg glued this letter to the left hand margin of p.105 where he sketched Entrueckung in his sketchbook III (see above). However, when it was removed at some point later, this portion of text on the left hand side was obscured. This, as indicated by the red arrow, has now been digitally restored and a full transcript can be given below.

Bitte an Frau Schönberg Empfehlungen auszuschicken.
Mit herzlichen Grüssen und auf baldiges Wiedersehen!
Ihr dankbarer
K. Horwitz
Von meiner Braut besten Dank und Erwiderung der Grüsse

Please also greet [Irene] Bien from us!
Vienna 7.VI I, 08
Herr Schönberg!
Herewith the copied poems! Please write to me, in case you want something from me, because I will be in Vienna only until Friday.
I hope to be in Gmunden by the 20th July at the latest.- I hope to complete the symphony here, in spite of the eternal running around, interruptions, corrections for Gablonz etc. I am glad to get away from this horrible heat, it is no longer to be endured.
The matter of the concert in November has been settled. Now we must do the most important thing: ask the State Coucillor how much he will offer.
Please convey my regards to Frau Schönberg.
With best regards and hoping to see you soon!
Your grateful
R Horwitz
From my bride, many thanks and reciprocated greetings.

Viel Glück also Ihren beiden und herzliche Grüsse
Ihr
Schönberg

Dear Horwitz, Many thanks for the poems. Now I can begin,
I hear – although from another source – that you will marry on Thursday already. Well, therefore you will hardly have time to work, and will have to devote yourself completely to your bride. Don’t worry – I will, by way of an exception not grumble if your score will not be ready. But you must undertake to catch up.
Send my sincere regards to your Fraulein Kochem and I send my best wishes to Frau Dr. Horowitz and I hope that the “poor” husband will behave nicely.
Lots of luck to you both, and best regards
yours
Schönberg

5. Schönberg to Heinrich Jalowetz, 18 July 1908
Postcard from:  Arnold Schönberg, Wien IX, Liechtensteinstrasse 68/70, Traunstein 24 bei Gmunden
To: Herrn Heinrich Jalowetz, Kapellmeister am Jubiläumstheater, Wien IX, Währingerstr.

Was machen Sie? Lassen Sie einmal was von sich hören! Kommen Sie einmal zu Besuch. Besten Dank im Voraus und herzl. Gruß
Ihr
Arnold Schönberg

Dear Jalowetz, would you be so kind and order for my wife, 1/2 kg Bitter-Almond-Cake at your, only known to you, delicatessen shop. Perhaps it would be best to send it from the shop to here C.O.D. Or, if this doesn’t work, could you pay, and I would immediately re-imburse you; or you could send it C.O.D.
What are you doing? Let us hear from you! Come and visit. Many thanks in advance and warm greetings
Yours
Arnold Schonberg

6. Reconstruction of how Schönberg glued Horwitz’s letter to p.105 of his Sketchbook III, probably in the last week of July 1908, obscuring his annotation in the top left-hand corner as he did so.

7. Litanei

Pages 148/149 of Stefan Anton George’s Der siebente Ring (Berlin, Blätter für die Kunst, 1907), scanned from Schönberg’s original copy (see G13 in Schönberg’s Bibliothek).
Used by Schönberg for the 3rd movement of his op. 10, Second String Quartet

8. Entrueckung

Pages 122/123 of Stefan Anton George’s Der siebente Ring (Berlin, Blätter für die Kunst, 1907), scanned from Schönberg’s original copy (see G13 in Schönberg’s Bibliothek).
Used by Schönberg for the 4th movement of his op. 10, Second String Quartet

9. Schönberg’s Op.10, Second String Quartet, Autograph Title Page
The torn section presumably bore another dedication, which Schönberg replaced with “Meiner Frau” for first performance 21 December 1908 (Library of Congress)
