Gerstl’s Letter to Ministry of Culture and Education

Gerstl’s letter to Ministerium für Kultus und Unterricht, 22 July 1908
Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna

Traunstein 22. Juli 1908

To the Ministry for Culture and Education

For five terms I have been a pupil of the Specialschule at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien under Herr Prof. Lefler. At the School Exhibition of the 19th of this month none of my paintings were exhibited. The School Exhibition has the purpose to account for the achievements of each pupil; moreover I did not only have the right to have my paintings exhibited, as Herr Prof. Lefler made the following comment about me to one of my colleagues: “He pursues quite new paths, it is hard to follow him, but I can do nothing for him.” By not exhibiting my work, without my knowledge and approval, I was excluded from the competition for a Specialschule prize, which was awarded to Herr Ignaz Schönfeld; last May and the last time four weeks ago, Herr Prof. Lefler declared this pupil to me as completely without talent. Since the rector of the der k.k. Akademie holds no authority for me, I beg the Ministry of Education to compensate me for the way I was dealt with, which is certainly more than merely incorrect.

Herr Prof. Lefler made the above mentioned remark to Herr Viktor Hammer

Gerstl received no reply. Instead, his letter was sent unanswered to Prof Lefler on 20 August 1908, who marked it “gelesen” (read) before it was quietly dismissed on 6 September with a perfunctory filenote from the Rector, Sigmund l’Allemand and filed.
