Selbstbildnis auf grünem Grund

RG88 Selbstbildnis auf grünem Grund, Winter 1907/Spring 1908
Oil on canvas, 37 x 34  cms. Leopold Museum.
Otto Nirenstein’s 1931 description, “Kopf, Selbstporträt, Ausschnitt aus einem grossen Bild.” – “Head, self-portrait, detail of a larger painting” – suggests that this had originally been a full-length, even life-size work, which would explain the somewhat unexpected expanse of background encompassing the artist’s head, who, having previously cut or bisected other paintings (see Selbstbildnis, lachend (Fragment), is the most likely candidate to have done so in this instance, too. Nonetheless, this self-portrait is a maturely painted, brutally honest self-representation, in which Gerstl unflatteringly depicts his high receding brow and weak chin, two features that apparently caused him lifelong disillusionment and is not without affinity to van Gogh’s similarly psychologically searing self-portraits. Gerstl’s appearance here is far more in keeping with his post-Gmunden 1907 look that that he maintained during the previous two years and, with the green background having much in common with his spring 1908 studio portraits, the work can be attributed to winter 1907 or early spring 1908.
Kallir 24 – exhibited at Neue Galerie from opening, 28 September 1931. Discovered after publication of my thesis so not included therein.
