Mathilde Schönberg to Alois Gerstl – 6/7 November 1908

• 2 page letter.
• Written after the discovery of Gerstl’s death on 5 November but before his funeral on 7th. Therefore this letter can be safely dated as 6th November, although there is a possibility that Mathilde wrote it on 7th before the burial.
• Although no envelope exists, it is likely, in view of the imminence of the funeral, that the letter was delivered by messenger.

>Werter Herr Gerstl. Ich danke Ihnen herzlichst für Ihre Mitteilung. Ich werde dem Leichenbegängnis nicht beiwohnen, da es ja wohl für Ihre Eltern eine zu aufregende Sache sein müßte mich zusehen. Der arme Richard weiß nichts mehr. Ich möchte Sie sehr bitten, so bald Sie es wissen, mir Richard’s Grabnummer mitzuteilen. – Hoffentlich werde ich Sie noch sehen.

Dear Herr Gerstl. Thank you very much for your communication. I will not attend the funeral, as it must be upsetting for your parents to see me. Poor Richard knows nothing any longer. I would ask you, as soon as you know it, to tell me the number of Richard’s grave. – I hope I will see you again.
