Thank you for sharing your work. I didn't know Gerstl until I visited an exhibition in Milan, "Schiele and his age" (2010). The Gerstl's Self-portrait (1904) was a revelation, and when I faced it, I suddenly realized the reason why I had bought the ticket (since I never loved the extreme aestheticism of Schiele and Klimt).
Your website is precious: it's not so easy to find informations and images about Gerstl.
I'm a painter too, and I'm searching for the humanity inside human beings.

Dear Dr. Coffer,

We have discovered your website on Richard Gerstl via the Austrian Cultural Council event in London on the 14th November.
I am an Australia painter and I am very interested in the music and of course the paintings and painters of the fin-de-siecle period.
I am also very much interested in the psyche, the ethos and the values of that time and your exploration of the subject and the period is very impressive and valuable for me.

Kind regards
John Holwey

Your website really fleshes out what must have been a terribly painful time for all three people concerned, a time which must, I think, be of interest to any Schoenberg fan. It's good, too, to debunk the myth of a composer's immediate feelings flowing into his music. It's often said Beethoven wrote some of his most cheerful music when he was depressed and vice versa. There's no reason to believe Schoenberg was any different, especially given the fact he was a stickler for technique. It's good, too, to see some Gerstls!

Dear Dr Coffer,
I just came across your site today as I was hunting for articles on Gerstl. There is so much to taken in! Let me thank you for providing such a comprehensive study of a sadly neglected artist. I am a painter myself and have been obsessed with Gerstl and the Austrian school since the age of fifteen - I am forty-one now. Lol. My own work has been influenced by Gerstl. I wrote a blog on Gerstl some time ago:

http://thepanicartist.livejournal.com/45281.html

I based it mostly on Richard Gerstl/ Oskar Kokoschka Galerie St. Etienne, La Verite Neu from the Dina Vierny-Musee Maillol and various other snippets I have found in books on Austrian Expressionism. I also have catalog on Gerstl by Otto Breicha but its in German and I don't understand a word of it. Lol. So your website is a godsend.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks.

All My Best

David
