Carl Zentzytzki (b.15.4.1841) was a “Buchhandlung Geschäftsführer” (Bookseller), who lived at Therese-Krones-Haus, Hohe Warte 37, Vienna IXX from 10 February 1901. Zentzytzki was married to Sophie, but apparently had no children. Consequently, the couple may have felt no need for the veranda-room on the first floor, which is probably where Gerstl (and his friend Viktor Hammer, who may have rented the studio before Gerstl) painted. Whether Gerstl rented the studio directly from Zentzytzki or from Zentzytzki’s landlord is not known. In either case, it can be safely assumed that Zentzytzki’s portrait can be ascribed to around 1902 when it was almost certainly painted in the Therese-Krones-Haus, and thus probably in Gerstl’s veranda-room studio. The 1897 “Plan-Skizze” reveals how he may have painted there for, as vividly illustrated by Moll’s woodcut, the light in the veranda-room appears to have been perfect for Gerstl’s needs.
